Government's contribution to ICT development in Maldives
Unlike some other developing countries, the Maldives is going towards modern technology very fast. Both government and the private sector have contribute significant efforts to develop the ICT sector in the country. There are some doubts about government contribution towards the Development of Information and Communication Technology when comparing with private and NGO sector. But I have to say that, when comparing with some other South Asian countries Maldives is in front. Percentage of ICT skilled people in Maldives so much higher than India and Pakistan. Governments first major involvement in establishment of first Telecommunications Policy in 2001. ADSL broadband Internet, are now available in Male and near areas. These areas cover 13 of the 200 inhabited islands, corresponding to about 42 per cent of the population. All inhabited islands have access to fixed-line telephones and cellular telephone services are available throughout the country. Teledensity as of end 2006 was 11 per cent for fixed telephones and 89 per cent for mobile telephones. BPO industry is not very well developed in Maldives. I think Private sector needs to come forward than government. Their are lot of Maldivian working as BPO's in Maldives and abroad. But developing BPO sector is not very difficult, because investing in BPO industry will not be a bad idea for any private company.
